The Latvian Roma are ready to give an astounding present — an unusual compact village. The preject implies the creation of a village for 500 families with their own ultra-modern production: glasshouses, utility warehouse for fruit and vegetable freezing and packing, a cleansing and co-generation station and also a turkey farm. Cost of the project — 70-75 million Euros. The unusual part of this project is the fact that it is going to be inhabited by Latvian Roma – that is why it is called «Roma commune of the 21 century».

Other than that, the project involving compact housing is a project that stimulates economic activity and widespread integration on an autonomous territory. The project will help to decrease unemployment, will improve the criminogenic situation, will increase the healthcare and education levels among the Roma, and will decrease emigration. This will be a project of public and private partnership: resources of EU structural funds, the autonomy and private investors.

We will grow fruit and vegetables, as well as purchase them from farmers, in order to freeze them according to the most modern Israeli technology by implementing quick shock freezing and vacuum packing. For the first time products will be frozen using compressed air other than nitrogen. Not a single berry goes to waste; every single trait and vitamin is retained for up to 9 months. Glasshouses in the village are also special – 2-5 hectares each. Irrigation by drop infusion, which is also based on new technology. The harvest is collected during all 12 months of the year! Strawberries grow on vines like grapes other than on flower-beds. Last year we attended a meeting with the Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussed questions regarding partnership. The Israeli are ready to supervise the project, send in specialists to train our people.

The end produce is in demand not only in Europe, but also in Asia. The village will include a professional school for preparing specialists who will work in glasshouses, farms and production facilities. Our children will go to regular city schools. There will be a bus which will pick them up and drop them off.
Only those who wish to change their life will be able to live in our commune, as well as those people who are ready to live according to Roma traditions – to build up. Secondly, these are people with a fresh outlook on life – enthusiasts. Lastly, the project initially implies: the village will be open for all those interested, not only representatives of the Roma nationality |
