The project provided an opportunity for different social groups (especially young people of different nationalities) to receive information on Roma history, culture and traditions, as well as to engage in active discussions about human rights and discrimination prevention, equality, looking at the situation of Roma in Latvia.
Lack of true the objective information about Roma is one of the main factors that contribute to society spread stereotypes and prejudices about Roma people that reinforce the gap between Roma and the rest of society, and that can lead to restricting the rights of Roma and discrimination. Without society understanding about Roma lifestyle, culture and history, it is not possible to establish a dialogue with Roma communities and to promote their integration into society.
The project created content will be available both on the Internet (official website of Roma Culture Centre: www.romucentrs.lv) and Roma history and art museum.
Through the activities of the project will be provided an opportunity for different social groups (especially young people of different nationalities) to pay special attention to Roma history and art museum, a special exhibition of the museum, its activities, the promotion of Latvian Roma cultural and public information and education about the history of ancient Latvian minority - Roma.
The project will provide the Roma history and art museum in continuous operation; will provide the museum expositions and informative material replenishment, which is the basis for the Museum of Roma continue to operate.
Planned:
- to continue the Centre and the museum's cooperation with Latvian schools through regular educational tours guided accompaniment;
- Provide an opportunity for students to use the Latvian Museum of existing materials in scientific work and research.
- It intends to continue to develop projects to enhance the museum's activities by providing services to the general public.
The project acquired knowledge and experience will allow the participants to better understand the benefits of intercultural dialogue, to get acquainted with the Roma culture and social situation, as well as to use this knowledge in their later life, and will promote an inclusive and tolerant society.
Looking at the political prospects for the sustainability of the project activities will contribute to the implementation of national identity, civil society and integration of the guidelines in 2012 and 2018, both at the national Roma integration package implementation.
Center representative is a member of the Board of the Roma Advisory Council of Ministry of Culture, which make it possible to inform the members of the Board of the Centre's current events, projects and operational vision.
The project aims is to enhance the public (especially young people) education and information about the Roma culture, life and history in Latvia, in order to reduce societal prejudices and negative stereotypes against the Roma community, which may potentially lead to discrimination against the Roma in different spheres of life.
To achieve the objective it is necessary to attract public attention to the Roma cultural heritage, which is a common Latvian cultural heritage and historical destiny of roma in Latvia, presenting it with the Baltic countries, the only Roma history and art museum-rich material. With the activities of the project was promoted for both the cohesion of society and inter-cultural dialogue between the Latvian living in Roma and non-Roma.
The project has provided a significant contribution to achieving the established goals: students, teachers, artists, foreign guests, ambassadors, diplomats etc. got information about Latvian Roma culture, lifestyle, and history, expanded their understanding of Latvian Roma and reduced the stereotypes about them.
During the project Centre carried out a study on the Roma Holocaust in Latvia "Latvian Roma Holocaust tragedy."(Work carried out in the archives, together studied 45,000 archive documents). On that basis, we set up an exhibition on 10 portable stalls about Roma holocaust in Latvia during World War II, which currently can be viewed on Roma History and Art Museum. Created and distributed information leaflets on: 1) the Roma Museum; 2) The Roma Holocaust;
The Centre opened the first Latvian Roma Holocaust exhibition in Latvia "Roma Holocaust in Latvia (1941, 1945)." In Academic Library of Latvian University which had wide public acceptance. The exhibition was shown in the Riga City Council hall, Madona House of Culture and currently can be viewed at Roma History and Art Museum.
Latvian society representatives and guests from abroad acquainted with Roma arts and cultural heritage and traditions, guests were given the opportunity to get acquainted with the fate of the Roma in Latvia and the Europe during World War II, which gave them the opportunity to expand their understanding of the roma community and reduce the stereotypes about them.
